Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has appealed to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) for a significant increase in gas prices by 147%, following a similar request from Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC). This proposed hike, if approved, would impact over 7.22 million consumers in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. SNGPL aims to raise the gas price by Rs2,646.18 per metric million British thermal unit (mmbtu), with a target average price of Rs4,446.89, citing a staggering revenue shortfall of Rs189.18 billion. The company seeks implementation from July 1, hoping to address financial challenges. Ogra is set to deliberate on SNGPL’s plea on March 25 in Lahore and March 27 in Peshawar. This move comes on the heels of a 67% gas price hike approved by the caretaker government in response to IMF demands, further straining consumers amidst ongoing inflation concerns. SSGC, in a separate plea, has also requested an additional increase of Rs274.40 per mmbtu. As regulatory hearings approach, stakeholders await decisions that could have profound implications for Pakistan’s energy landscape and economic stability.
