Hammad Azhar was born on August 10, 1981, into a political Punjabi Arain family in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. His father, Mian Muhammad Azhar, served as the former Governor of Punjab (1990–1993) and was a co-founder of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q). Azhar received his early education from Aitchison College and later attended Wellington College. He pursued a bachelor’s degree in Development Economics from the SOAS, University of London and completed his postgraduate diploma in Law from the BPP Law School. In 2005, he was formally called to the Bar at The Honorable Society of Lincoln’s Inn1.
Political Career
Hammad Azhar joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in 2011. His political journey gained momentum when he contested the 2013 Pakistani general election as a PTI candidate from Constituency NA-121 (Lahore-IV). Although unsuccessful, this experience fueled his determination to contribute to Pakistan’s political landscape.
In the 2018 General Elections, Azhar emerged victorious from NA-126 (Lahore-IV) and became a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan. His tenure extended from August 2018 to January 2023. During this period, he held several significant ministerial positions within the Imran Khan ministry:
