To tackle the unhealthy air in Punjab caused by smog, the Lahore High Court has instructed all schools in the region to shut on Saturdays until the end of January. This decision comes after the interim Punjab government made it mandatory for people in ten districts to wear face masks when going out. Despite earlier efforts like a limited lockdown, the smog problem persists in Lahore and other areas.
Today, the Air Quality Index in Lahore showed a reading of 293 at 11 am, which falls under the unhealthy category. This is mainly due to PM2.5, a harmful substance that can cause serious health issues when inhaled.
The court’s order also includes a direction for private sector employees to work from home for two days a week. It emphasized the need for action against industrial units found operating despite being sealed initially. The court expects officials to follow up on its directives and take necessary steps.
Smog is caused by various factors like low wind speed, high humidity, and pollution from neighboring countries like India. It poses risks to health, especially for those with respiratory or heart conditions, children, elderly, and pregnant women. Symptoms of smog exposure include coughing, chest pain, and fatigue.
Experts recommend precautions such as wearing masks, using air purifiers, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak smog hours.
